Young people shaping climate solutions

Young people from around Aotearoa are stepping up to lead climate action – and their voices are taking ideas all the way to the global stage.

Climate change isn’t a distant threat - rangatahi are living with its impacts now, and they are demanding a say in how we respond.

At Aotearoa Youth COP, held at the University of Auckland in July, over 100 young people aged 14 - 30 took on the roles of negotiators, policy makers and advocates. Through debates, workshops and collaborative sessions, participants tackled key climate issues and crafted solutions reflecting their priorities.

From Aotearoa to the world

The event culminated in the Aotearoa Youth Climate Statement, a document reflecting rangatahi priorities on adaptation, equity and climate justice. This statement was delivered to the New Zealand Government and then shared by a youth delegation at COP30 in Brazil — ensuring young voices were heard on a global stage.

Youth engagement ensures climate decisions reflect the needs and lived experiences of the next generation.
