Past Event Highlights

COP30 UN Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil

Save the Children New Zealand led a delegation of rangatahi (youth) to the COP30 UN Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil, held in November 2025. The youth representatives traveled there to advocate for Pacific communities and push for child-centred climate policies on the global stage. Prior to the event, Save the Children NZ and the Youth Climate Collective hosted the Aotearoa Youth COP on July 26, 2025, at the University of Auckland. This event brought together over 100 rangatahi for mock climate negotiations, which culminated in the creation of the Aotearoa Youth COP Statement. This document was officially presented to the New Zealand Government before being delivered internationally at COP30.

Identity is my right to be me workshops

During August and September 2025, Save the Children New Zealand partnered with Emma from The Light Library and four wonderful Auckland libraries, Takapuna Library, Howick Library, Takanini Library, and Te Atatū Peninsula Library, to deliver a series of creative workshops exploring identity through storytelling and bookmaking.

Bringing together nearly 90 tamariki and their whānau from across Tāmaki Makaurau, the workshops created a welcoming space for participants to reflect on what identity means to them, share their experiences, and express themselves through creativity. Guided by Emma, attendees learned a variety of imaginative bookbinding techniques and used their handmade books as a starting point for meaningful conversations about belonging, culture, family, community, and self-expression.

We are incredibly grateful to our library partners and to every tamaiti and whānau member who joined us and helped make these workshops such a memorable and inspiring experience. Watch the video below to see highlights from our first workshop and hear more about the impact of this creative journey.

Youth COP simulation 2024

The first ever COP simulation here in Aotearoa!

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is an international climate meeting held each year by the United Nations — featuring all countries that are party to the international treaty called the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Our COP Simulation guided youth participants through a day in the life of a COP delegate.

Over the course of the day, attendees simulated the COP process as government representatives, participated in committee discussions, and gained a deeper understanding of climate policy and the importance of collaboration in addressing climate change.
