Child-centred programmes that deliver real change

With the help of our partners and supporters, we’ve been working in Aotearoa New Zealand for 75 years, supporting children and tamariki to learn, grow and become who they want to be, no matter where they live. Our life-changing programmes in the Pacific, Asia and around the world enable children and their families to thrive.

Putting children at the heart of what we do

Save the Children New Zealand manages and implements programmes that help make children safer, healthier and the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. In Aotearoa New Zealand, we ensure children’s rights are understood and upheld through our advocacy and education and youth engagement programmes. We reach children in the toughest places and during the most extreme humanitarian emergencies. From Ukraine to the Horn of Africa, Afghanistan to the Pacific, we go where the need is greatest and are among the first to arrive and last to leave. We ensure children’s unique needs are met and their voices are heard. We deliver lasting results for millions of children, including those hardest to reach. We do whatever it takes for children – every day and in times of crisis – transforming their lives and the future we share.

International Programmes

Save the Children New Zealand currently manages and implements development and humanitarian programmes across the Pacific, South-East and South-Central Asia, focused on saving children’s lives, fighting for their rights and helping them realise their full potential. This includes 10 projects supported by the New Zealand Aid Programme.

We aim to ensure that no child dies from preventable causes before their fifth birthday, that all children learn from a quality basic education, and are steadfast in the belief that violence against children can no longer be tolerated. To achieve these outcomes, we deliver evidence-based programmes that reach children, families and communities. These programmes focus on health, education and protecting children. We work to reach girls and boys caught up in humanitarian emergencies, and make children more resilient to climate change and disasters. We work in partnership with local communities, all levels of government, other NGOs, community and advocacy groups, corporate partners and individual donors to create change for children, families and their communities.

In Aotearoa New Zealand

Alongside our advocacy work, we launched a new education programme in 2021 for schools and parents that aims to teach Kiwi kids about their rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The free online programme, designed by our inhouse educators, helps children in New Zealand learn about their rights, from access to healthcare, housing and education to being protected from violence or practicing their culture. It includes a range of cross-curricular resources for teachers, children and the wider whānau and school community.
