Haruka is a 16 year old youth climate activist from Vanuatu who has shared in a vlog the impact that climate change is having on her village and their livelihood. Her family home was damaged during Cyclone Pam in 2015, and rebuilding has taken years. The long-term impact of this and other climate disasters in her community has inspired Haruka to become an advocate for stronger climate action.
She participates in Save the Children’s youth climate events, promoting awareness of climate risks and the need for emission reductions. Her work focuses on ensuring children and young people are not only protected from the effects of climate change but also have a voice in decisions about their future.
Video Comprehension Resource
Our video comprehension resource is a way to incorporate Haruka's vlog and the topics she raises into your literacy programme - helping tamariki grow their empathy and critical thinking while also practicing those key literacy skills which aid understanding.
In this resource there is a student sheet with the link to the video, a set of 10 comprehension questions based on Haruka's vlog, a vocabulary challenge as well as further learning challenges (perfect for those early finishers who speed through the task!). There is also an answer sheet either for the students to check their own understanding or to assist the teacher with assessing their comprehension.
Please let us know if you give this resource a try and if it is useful for you and your ākonga! If you and your students are keen to learn more about the climate crisis and its impacts please get in touch - we would love to help you out. Email us at Education@scnz.org.nz
