What’s the Buy Nothing New Challenge?

The Buy Nothing New Challenge is a great way to get involved during Plastic Free July. The challenge is simple: buy nothing new for the whole month of July…except for the essentials like food, medical supplies and hygiene products. There are also simple weekly challenges to keep you on track, like visiting your local second-hand store, joining a library, running a swap or giving a new lease of life to something you have lying around the house.

Our team at Save the Children New Zealand is giving it a go – and we’d love you to do the same. In fact, share your pictures or videos of you taking part in our Buy Nothing New challenge and you could win a copy of Nicole Miller’s beautiful picture book ‘Celia Seagull and the Plastic Sea’.

Our Education Hub also has a range of fantastic resources for Plastic Free July, such as the bilingual waste hierarchy poster.

What is Plastic Free July?

Plastic Free July® is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.

Children have a right to a healthy environment

Under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, children have a right to a healthy environment. Aggressive advertising of plastic products to children, inaction from adults, and lagging environmental policies mean that today’s children will bear the brunt of climate change and environmental degradation.

We aim to empower children in what can feel like an overwhelming issue, with the knowledge to make sustainable choices that they can share with their community.
