Tamariki can get involved in Election 2026
Kiwi Kids have the chance to cast their vote and have their voices heard in the lead up to this year’s General Election, voting via a new online voting portal for children launched by Save the Children.
While they may still be years away from casting an official vote, tamariki and rangatahi aged under 18 can participate in Save the Children’s Kiwi Kids Vote and share their views on the issues they would see positive change on.
The online platform is open to all young people across Aotearoa New Zealand, whether they choose to participate individually from home or as part of a school-based activity.
Schools can set up their own voting booths, incorporate voting into classroom learning programmes, or run school-wide voting events to encourage discussion about civic participation and democracy.
Save the Children New Zealand Programmes and Advocacy Director Jacqui Southey says it is vital that children and young people have opportunities to express their views on decisions that affect their lives.
"Children and young people have important perspectives on the issues facing New Zealand today, from climate change and education to wellbeing, affordability and the future they want to see for their communities.
"Giving young people the opportunity to participate in Kiwi Kids Vote helps them to learn about and experience the democratic process while ensuring their voices are heard. Children may be too young to vote, but they have the right to share their views, and it is our role as adults to listen.
"The insights we gather through Kiwi Kids Vote help us better understand what matters most to tamariki and rangatahi, and provide an opportunity to elevate those views to inform decision-makers and the wider community on the positive changes children wish to see."
Participation is simple. Any person under the age of 18 can take part by visiting kiwikidsvote.nz and completing the online vote.
Via the online voting portal, teachers and schools interested in participating can run classroom or school-wide voting activities, helping students learn about democracy, citizenship and civic engagement in a fun and meaningful way.
