Advisory: Official handover of the 2025 Aotearoa Youth COP Statement

Save the Children New Zealand will tonight host a virtual event at 7pm marking the official handover of the 2025 Aotearoa Youth COP Statement to government climate spokespeople and the Children’s Commissioner Dr Claire Achmad.

This youth-driven statement was developed from the insights and recommendations shared by over 150 young people who took part in Aotearoa Youth COP this July, a national, youth-led simulation of the UN’s climate negotiations.

About the Statement:

The statement brings together youth-led ideas and solutions across key themes aligned with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Conference of the Parties (COP), including: Loss and Damage, Sustainable Food Systems, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), Youth Participation and Governance.

Why it matters:

The Aotearoa Youth COP Statement is a youth-led call to action - ensuring the voices of Aotearoa’s rangatahi are heard at home and on the world stage, including at COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

Generation Hope Youth Ambassador Lily, 15, said:

"Events like this give rangatahi like me a voice, an opportunity to discuss how we believe we can solve a collective problem without judgement or difficulty. We may not be the past, but we are the present and future, and the outcome of what we do now will impact us and future generations to come."
