Landslides and lunch schemes

What if it rained for weeks? What if landslides destroyed your home and school? What if the playground was gone? And what if this happened every year or every few years?

One of Save the Children’s programmes in Brazil and Colombia, which Save the Children New Zealand supports, empowers children to ensure their own well-being following natural disasters.

After landslides, which are a particular problem in Latin America, children often need somewhere safe to play and to come to terms with what happened to them. In these places we’ve created safe spaces, child protection networks and educational programmes where children can teach other children about dangerous issues.

Save the Children New Zealand supports a number of programmes focussing on children who are poor or who have been abused, exploited or neglected. Among other initiatives, teacher training, free lunch schemes, uniforms, books and after-school activities are all being supported so that children have a better chance at success, can learn about their rights and are able to develop their own sense of self-worth.

By working with local NGOs and community organisations, we are also providing health, education, nutrition, protection and parenting services to vulnerable communities.
