East Africa drought 2011

East Africa Drought 1 East Africa Drought 2

The drought and resulting food crisis in East Africa was one of the largest emergency situations facing the world in recent years.

Save the Children’s East Africa appeal and emergency response was the largest of its kind in our 90-year history.

In 2011, New Zealanders showed a massive amount of support for our East Africa food crisis appeal and $470,000 was donated to Save the Children New Zealand.

Since the initial response our colleagues in East Africa have seen some improvements and the intervention of aid agencies, like Save the Children, has helped to save millions of lives and get daily life-saving food, water, healthcare and nutritional support to children and families in need.

Since July 2011, Save the Children has worked with local governments, international humanitarian organisations and affected communities to reach 2.5 million people across East Africa.

Watch our film “Fill a Truck” to see just how Save the Children delivered vital food supplies to those in need during the East Africa food crisis.

Save the Children is still working in the region to help children get the education and protection they need.

All this would not have been possible without the generosity of our donors and the general public.

Thank you.
