Save the Children applauds the repeal of Section 59

The New Zealand Parliament has shown leadership and courage in passing the Crimes Amendment Bill (Abolition of Force as a Justification for Child Discipline).  The repeal of Section 59 is a step closer to addressing the issue of child abuse and protecting the children of New Zealand, according to Save the Children New Zealand's Executive Director, John Bowis.

"Save the Children applauds the Members of Parliament who overwhelmingly voted in support of the Bill.  I would especially like to thank Sue Bradford for her hard work in the interests of New Zealand's children.  Her tenacity and passion has been inspiring for those, like Save the Children, who work so hard to protect children from abuse and violence,” said John Bowis.

This legislation will help support work underway in Government and in the community to reduce child abuse in New Zealand. However, it is vital that we continue to take action to eliminate child abuse.

“We must now focus our attention on providing the community with education and information to support parents. We need to educate our society that there are alternatives to physical discipline, " said John Bowis.

Save the Children New Zealand advocates for the rights of children, and works for a world that respects and values each child, listens to children and learns, and a world where all children have hope and opportunity.
