Earthquake in Haiti

A powerful and devastating earthquake has struck Haiti on Tuesday. An estimated 1.8 million residents were violently shaken by the earthquake affecting the densely populated areas near Port-au-Prince.  We have worked in Haiti since 1985.

Our priority is to save children's lives by providing shelter, clean water, food and medical assistance.

What we’re doing

•  We’re already distributing medical supplies to hospitals and clinics, which are low or have run out of supplies. We are working in partnership with a local partner. On 25 January 297 additional patients were treated in Jacmel, and another temporary health clinic began treating patients.
•  We’ve established 7 field hospitals providing children and families with life-saving health and nutrition services.
•  33 trucks have distributed water to 19 distribution points.
•  We’re supporting families with essential household and hygiene supplies such as blankets, cooking pots and plastic sheeting to meet their basic needs.
•  We’re working to ensure children are protected from abuse, exploitation, and family separation. We've set up 13 child friendly spaces in Port au Prince and Jacmel, providing activities for over 6,000 children .
•  We’re working to ensure that children are able to access safe and quality education.
•  We are providing food and livelihoods support to approximately 50,000 families in the worst-affected communities. This will include providing 25,000 families with food rations for three months and working with 25,000 through cash-for-work projects
