Meet our Board

Chairperson

Allan Freeth was elected Chairman of our Board in March 2008, having previously spent some time as Chairman of the Board of Governors of Wellington’s Queen Margaret College. He was educated at Nelson College and the University of Canterbury and gained a PhD in population genetics from the Australian National University. He is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Treasury and has served as a Director for Genesis Research and Development Corporation.  He is currently Chief Executive Officer of TelstraClear.

Allan lives in Khandallah with his wife, Gaylene.  They have three children: Olivia May, Sarah Louise and Matthew Thomas.  In his free time Allan enjoys reading, science, swimming, tennis and yoga.

He says: “I am delighted to join the Save the Children board and am excited about my role as Chairman in helping the organisation further the rights and well-being of children in new Zealand and around the world.”

Martin Hawes

Martin Hawes has been Board President since 2003. He previously worked as a business consultant for 10 years up until 1997 and has spent time as an independent director for several companies and organisations. A finance and business expert, Martin has presented hundreds of seminars and is the author of a range of best-selling books on New Zealand finance.

In his free time, Martin contributes to financial magazines and journals. He is an accomplished rock climber and mountaineer and in 1995 was a member of an expedition which attempted Mt Everest.

 

Treasurer

Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy was appointed to the Board in March 2008, after a long association with the Northern Suburbs Branch of Save the Children. A qualified Chartered Accountant, Tom was previously a partner of the international accounting firm Ernst and Young (from 1977 - 1995) . He currently works as an accountant and consultant for the government and private sector.

Co-opted Members:

Philip Shewell

Philip Shewell has been involved in retail since moving to New Zealand from the UK in the early 70's. He spent seven years as Managing Director for Kirkcaldie & Stains before becomign a member of the Board in 2003. Philip holds a number of Directorships in a variety of corporate disciplines and is Chairman of Positively Wellington Tourism. His current primary role is as a father to his 10-year old triplet sons.

Therese Walsh

Therese Walsh is currently employed with Rugby World Cup 2011. She was previously Audit Manager with KPMG and Auditor for the Audit Division as well as General Manager Corporate Services for the New Zealand Rugby Union. Therese is a member of the College of Chartered Accountants and has a Bachelor of Commerce and Adminstration from Victoria University of Wellington.

Rae Julian

Rae Julian is one of the newest members of the Board, appointed in February 2008. She was previously Executive Director of the New Zealand Council for International Development, the umbrella body for 84 non-government organisations that work internationally.She has had extensive overseas development experience in South East Asia and the Pacific as well as significant research experience with the Parliamentary Labour Research Unit and the Office of Commissioner for Children. Rae is currently working as a Development Consultant.

Allanah James

Allanah was appointed to the Board in April 2008. She was Corporate Affairs Manager at AgResearch since September 2004 and spent time as Senior Meida Advisor with Telecom and with the Tertiary Education Commission. In the early 1990's, Allanah was a Senior Journalist and Presenter for Television New Zealand.
