Save the Children fights for children's rights
Much of our work in New Zealand is about raising awareness of children’s rights in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Take a look at the convention and let us know how you can help NZ comply.
Removal of the defence for child abuse - Section 59
Section 59, Crimes Act 1961 - Save the Children New Zealand lobbied the Government to repeal Section 59 of the Crimes Act. On May 2nd 2007, the major parties in the New Zealand Parliament reached an historic agreement in the support of a Bill to ban corporal punishment of children in New Zealand. New Zealand is the first English-speaking country to ban the 'use of force for correction' of children.
The Crimes (Substituted Section 59) Amendment Act 2007 came into force on the 21st June 2007.
