EVERY ONE campaign

Our global child survival campaign

Worldwide, over eight million children die every year before their fifth birthday from preventable and treatable causes. That’s more than 22,000 children dying every day.

World leaders have pledged to reduce child deaths by two-thirds by 2015. To date, they are still not on track. Save the Children believes this has to change and our global EVERY ONE campaign is a direct response to help achieve this goal.

Our vision is that within five years, no child under the age of five will die from preventable causes and that people will no longer tolerate high levels of child deaths.

We stopped children dying from basic illnesses in rich countries a century ago. We can end it for good in poor countries too.

New Zealand’s campaign – do 1 thing

In March 2010, Her Royal Highness Princess Anne launched the EVERY ONE campaign in New Zealand.

We are asking all New Zealanders to do at least one thing to save a child’s life, by raising money, lobbying leaders or simply spreading the word. It all helps to prevent children dying needlessly.

In 2011, Save the Children New Zealand raised NZ$ 118,633 for our EVERY ONE campaign work.

Thanks to our supporters, this money will be used to invest in maternal, newborn and child survival programmes that will help save millions of lives, as well as lobby world leaders to make good on their Millennium Development Goal promises.

If you could do one thing, what would it be? Visit www.do1thing.org.nz to find out more.

State of the World's Mothers report 2011

In 2011, New Zealand was reported to be one of the top ten places to be a mother. The 12th annual State of the World's Mothers report and index, produced by our colleagues in America, documented conditions for mothers and children in 164 countries and shows where mothers fare best and worst.

The ten most bottom-ranked countries – eight of which come from sub-Saharan Africa - performed poorly on all indicators. Afghanistan ranked at the bottom of the list of 164 countries. Conditions for mothers and their children in the bottom countries are grim. On average, one woman in 30 will die from pregnancy-related causes. One child in six dies before his or her fifth birthday, and one child in three suffers from malnutrition.
