
In 2000, world leaders committed to eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), including primary school for all boys and girls by 2015.
Although the number of out-of-school primary age children in the world has fallen dramatically from over 100 million to 77 million, the situation in countries affected by conflict has seen little improvement. More than half the children out of school - 39 million - live in these countries.
Save the Children predicts that without urgent action at least 30 million children will be out of school in 2015, most in conflict-affected countries.
