Save the Children compiles data bi-annually on children's rights and makes this available to policy-makers , in order to develop a deeper understanding and promote better, informed decision making around the issues accutely affect children.
A child's right to survival and development are currently severely threatened by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
From January to August 2008, 77 Palestinian children and 4 Israeli children have been killed. In addition 387 Palestinian children and 8 Israeli children have been injured as a result of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Shockingly, these figures mean that more children have died in the first half of 2008 than in all of 2007. Children in Gaza face restricted access to healthcare inside Israel. Between January and June 2008, at least 8 Palestinian children died as a result of Israeli restrictions preventing them from entering Israel for healthcare.
Of equal concern for the rights of children is the ongoing lack of unity between the Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas. Inadequate healthcare resulting from the Gaza health sector strike that started 30 August 2008 has so far claimed the lives of 5 patients, including a nine-month-old baby.
The education sector strike that began on 24 August 2008 has caused disruption in 381 government schools, affecting some 250,000 students.
Save the Children has produced two fact sheets on how the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is affecting the rights of children.
